Well, let me tell ya ’bout this here Christmas Carol Comic thing. I ain’t no fancy book reader, mind you, but even I can get behind a good story, especially one ’bout Christmas. My grandbaby, she loves them picture books, calls ’em “comics,” and she showed me this one ’bout a grumpy old fella named Scrooge.
Now, this Scrooge fella, he ain’t nothin’ but a mean one. Hates Christmas, hates people, just plain hates everything, it seems. He’s got more money than a hog has bristles, but he’s tighter than a tick on a dog’s back. Won’t give a penny to nobody, not even them poor orphans singin’ carols outside his door. This comic, it shows him all hunched over, lookin’ like he just swallowed a lemon whole. The pictures, they ain’t fancy, but you can see the mean streak right in his eyes.
Then comes the spooky part. This here Scrooge, he gets visited by some ghosts. First, his old partner, Marley, comes back, lookin’ all chained up and miserable. He tells Scrooge he’s gotta change his ways or he’ll end up just like him, wanderin’ around in the afterlife, lugging around all the bad deeds he done. The comic makes it real scary-like, with Marley all see-through and rattlin’ those chains. My grandbaby, she covered her eyes at that part, but she peeked through her fingers, couldn’t resist seein’ what happened next.
- First ghost shows Scrooge his past, all the good times he missed out on ’cause he was too busy bein’ greedy.
- Second ghost shows him how folks are celebratin’ Christmas right now, all happy and generous, while Scrooge sits alone in his cold, dark house.
- Third ghost, that’s the scariest one, shows him his future, and let me tell ya, it ain’t pretty. Scrooge sees himself dead and alone, nobody carin’ a lick about him.
The comic does a good job of showin’ how Scrooge is feelin’ all this. You can see the fear in his eyes, the regret on his face. He starts to realize what a miserable life he’s been livin’ and how he’s wasted all his chances to be happy.
After seein’ all that, Scrooge has a change of heart, quick as a hiccup. He wakes up on Christmas morning a changed man. He’s all smiles and giggles, throwin’ money around like it’s confetti. He buys a big ol’ turkey for the Cratchit family, them poor folks who work for him, and he gives money to charity and just generally acts like a decent human bein’. The comic ends with him all happy and surrounded by friends, eatin’ Christmas dinner and havin’ a grand ol’ time. It’s a real heartwarming endin’, makes you feel all fuzzy inside.
Now, I heard tell there’s other versions of this Christmas Carol story. Some folks made movies about it, even. My neighbor, she told me about one with some fella named Patrick Stewart, says he’s a real good actor. And another one, older, with a fella named Alastair Sim. I ain’t seen ’em, but I reckon they tell the same story, just in a different way.
But this here comic, it’s somethin’ special. It’s simple, easy to understand, and the pictures, well, they tell the story just fine. Even an old woman like me can follow along and get the message. And that message is clear as a bell: don’t be a Scrooge! Be kind, be generous, and cherish the people around you, ‘specially during Christmas time. And if you don’t have no loved ones close by, shoot, go find some! There’s always folks who need a little kindness, especially during the holidays.
This Christmas Carol comic, it’s a good reminder of what Christmas is all about. It ain’t about the presents or the fancy food, it’s about sharin’ love and joy and makin’ the world a little brighter. So go on, read it with your young’uns, or read it by yourself, it don’t matter. Just remember the lesson it teaches, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll have a happier Christmas this year.
And hey, that list of Santa’s, I heard it starts with “A.” Good for them folks whose names start with that letter! I guess little Abigail and Andy are gonna be gettin’ lots of presents this year! Now, let me go get myself a warm drink and settle in. It’s gettin’ cold outside and this talkin’ has made me thirsty.
