Alright, let me tell ya ’bout this Des Moines Latino Film Festival. Never been to one of these film thingies myself, but my neighbor, that young Maria, she went and told me all about it. Sounded like a real hootenanny!
So, this festival, it’s the first of its kind in Iowa, they say. Means ain’t nobody done this before here. It’s all about them Latino movies. You know, movies made by folks from down south way, where they speak Spanish and all that. Maria says they show all sorts of stuff, ya know, about their lives and their families and such.
- They got movies about happy stuff.
- They got movies about sad stuff.
- Maria said some movies even make you think hard.
Now, I ain’t one for thinkin’ too hard, but Maria, she’s a smart cookie. She says these movies, they show you the real deal, the good and the bad. She says it’s important to see how other folks live, even if it ain’t nothin’ like our way here in Des Moines.
This film festival, it ain’t just some small thing neither. It’s a whole four-day shebang! Four days of movies! That’s a lot of sittin’, I tell ya. My old bones would be achin’ somethin’ fierce. But Maria, she sat through most of ’em. Said they had food and music too. Now that’s somethin’ I can get behind! Good food, good music, that’s my kinda party. They had that festival at that Fleur Cinema Cafe place. Fancy name, eh?
They showed all kinds of Latino films. I think Maria said somethin’ about ‘em showin’ the beauty and the hard parts of Latino culture. She said it’s important to understand where people come from, you know, their roots and all that. Sounds like a good lesson to me.
The Des Moines Latino Film Festival, it ain’t just about watchin’ movies though. Maria said it’s about bringin’ people together. Latino folks and folks like me, you know, just regular Iowans. She said it’s a way to learn about each other and celebrate our differences. That’s a nice thought, ain’t it? We could all use a little more understandin’ in this world.
And get this, it was FREE! Can you believe it? Free movies, free food, free music. That’s what Maria said anyways. Shoot, if I’d known that, I might’ve gone myself, achin’ bones and all. Maybe next year, I’ll have Maria take me. She can explain all the fancy movie stuff to me, and I can enjoy the food and music.
This year it was in April, the 17th, 19th and a couple of other days too. Four days all together. It was put on by the Latino Center of Iowa. Sounds like they do good work over there. Maria says they help Latino folks out with all sorts of things. Glad to hear it. We all need a little help sometimes.
So yeah, that’s the Des Moines Latino Film Festival in a nutshell. Movies, food, music, and a whole lotta learnin’ about Latino culture. Sounds like a good time to me. Maybe I’ll see ya there next year. I’ll be the old lady with the achin’ bones, but I’ll be there!
Oh, and Maria said somethin’ about it bein’ on Fleur Drive. 4545 Fleur Drive, I think she said. Or maybe it was 4545 Fleur somethin’ else. Either way, it’s there in Des Moines somewhere. You can’t miss it! Just look for all the happy folks eatin’ good food and listenin’ to that lively music.
Anyways, that’s all I got to say about it. Go see it for yourself next year. You might just learn a thing or two, and you definitely won’t go hungry. That’s for sure!
