Alright, alright, lemme tell ya ’bout this here… uh… Dumbarton Oaks Jane Austen Film Festival. Yeah, that’s a mouthful, ain’t it?
So, this thing, it’s been goin’ on for a spell. They say it’s the, what, 11th year? Or maybe the 12th? Lord, I can’t keep track. Anyway, it’s back. They show them fancy movies, you know, the ones with all the pretty dresses and folks talkin’ all proper-like.
It’s at this Dumbarton House place, up there in the city, Washington D.C. , I think. They got this big ol’ garden, real pretty, with flowers and all that. And they put up a big sheet, like a big bedsheet, and show the movies outside. Can you believe it? Movies outside! Under the stars and all.
Now, I ain’t never been to one of these things myself. Too much fuss for an old woman like me. But my niece, she went last year. Said it was real nice. She took her fella, and they sat on a blanket and watched one of them Jane Austen movies. You know, the lady who wrote all them books about courtin’ and such.
- Movies: They show a whole bunch of movies, all based on them Jane Austen books. “Love and Friendship,” that’s one. I reckon there’s others, but I can’t remember their names. Too fancy for me.
- Where: It’s at that Dumbarton House place, 2715 Q Street NW, Washington D.C. Sounded like a fancy address to me.
- When: Well, they usually have it in July. But them tickets, they go on sale in June. You gotta be quick, I hear. They sell out fast.
This year, they havin’ it again. Same place, same fancy movies. They say it’s a good time. You can bring your husband or your kids or your friends. Or just go by yourself, I guess. Ain’t nobody gonna stop ya.
They say it’s real romantic-like. You know, sittin’ under the stars, watchin’ them love stories. My niece said it was all “timeless charm and wit.” I don’t know what that means, but it sounds nice, I guess. She said everyone was all dressed up, not like us folks out here in the country. But I guess that’s to be expected in the city, huh?
They got food and drinks there too, I hear. But it’s probably all that fancy stuff, you know, little sandwiches and them fizzy drinks. Not like a good home-cooked meal. But I guess it’s good enough for city folk.
If you like them old-timey movies and you don’t mind sittin’ outside, then this might be somethin’ you’d enjoy. Just remember to bring a blanket, ’cause it might get chilly at night. And maybe some bug spray, ’cause them skeeters are always out lookin’ for a bite.
And like I said, them tickets go fast. So if you wanna go, you gotta get on it quick. Don’t wait ’til the last minute, or you’ll be outta luck.
Jane Austen Film Festival, that’s what they call it. Sounds fancy, don’t it? But I reckon it’s just a bunch of folks gettin’ together to watch some movies. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that, I s’pose. Even if it ain’t my cup of tea. It is in the city, Washington D.C. to be exact so you know those city folk like their fancy things.
Heck, if I was younger, maybe I’d go myself. But these old bones ain’t up for all that travelin’ and sittin’ around. I’ll stick to my TV and my comfy chair, thank you very much. But you young folks, you go on and have yourselves a good time. Enjoy them movies and that “timeless charm and wit,” whatever that is.
So there ya have it. That’s all I know ’bout this Dumbarton Oaks Jane Austen Film Festival. Hope I explained it good enough for ya. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make myself some supper. All this talk about movies and city folk has made me hungry.
They do have other things at Dumbarton House too, not just this here festival. My niece said they got tours and stuff. Even a Jane Austen themed tour, would you believe it? But she didn’t go to that one. Said she got her fill of Jane Austen at the movie night.
So yeah, if you missed the festival or somethin’, you could always check out them other things. But for the festival itself, you gotta be on the ball in June to get them tickets. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya.
I heard someone say this Dumbarton House got a garden. A real big one. That’s where they show the film. Sounds like a pretty place. Now, don’t you go thinking it’s like my garden. Mine’s got tomatoes and beans. This one’s got flowers and such. All fixed up and fancy, you know? City folks like things all pretty.
And they use big words when they talk about this festival. “Experience the timeless charm and wit” they say. I don’t know about all that “charm” and “wit”. I reckon it just means it’s a good time. But those city folks always gotta make things sound fancy.
So that’s about all I know. It is a film festival in Washington D.C. and it sounds like something for the younger crowd. If you like those Jane Austen stories and you don’t mind going all the way to the city, then maybe you should go. Just remember to get them tickets early and don’t forget your blanket!
