This here dash motor sports, it’s a real hoot, I tell ya! Like them little cars, the ones you see folks racin’ round a track. Not them big fancy ones, but smaller, like toys almost, but not really. This old gal don’t know all the fancy words, but I seen ’em, and it’s somethin’ else.
They got these little tracks, see, and the cars, they zip around, fast as lightning. Some folks, they get real serious about it. They build them cars themselves, piece by piece. Spend hours, days even, makin’ ’em just right. And the tracks! Oh, they build them tracks too. All sorts of twists and turns. Reminds me of ol’ Bessie, our cow, tryin’ to find her way back to the barn after a storm.
Now, I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout somethin’ called “HO scale.” Don’t rightly know what that means, but it sounds important. Maybe it’s how big them little cars are. They got different kinds, too. Some are red, some are white, some are even grey. Just like my chickens. Got a red one, we call him Rusty. And a white one, she’s Snowball. Don’t have a grey one, though. Maybe I should get one, call him Dusty, after them dash motor sports cars.
They say these dash motor sports fellas, they make good stuff. “High quality,” they say. Means it’s good, lasts a long time. Like my old cast iron skillet. Had that thing for years, still cooks up a mean batch of biscuits. And “competitively priced,” too. That means it ain’t too expensive, I reckon. Good for folks who don’t have a lot of money to throw around, like me.
Now, you wanna get into this dash motor sports thing? They say it’s easy. Well, easier than milkin’ a stubborn cow, that’s for sure. Some folks, they go to these things called “Cars and Coffee.” Sounds fancy, don’t it? Like they’re drinkin’ coffee and lookin’ at cars. Maybe they are. Don’t know if they got them little dash motor sports cars there, though. Might be them big ones.
I heard talk ’bout somethin’ called “autocross” too. And “rallycross.” Sound kinda the same to me. Like two peas in a pod. Cept’ one’s on dirt, and the other, I don’t rightly know. Maybe gravel? Or ice? Lordy, ice! Imagine them little cars slippin’ and slidin’ on ice. That’d be a sight! Like watchin’ my old man try to dance after a few too many at the county fair.
Folks say it’s gettin’ more popular, this dash motor sports. More people watchin’ it, more people doin’ it. Like them big races, “Formula One” and “NASCAR,” they call ’em. Lots of folks watchin’ them on the TV. We got one of them newfangled TVs now, big screen. Can see them cars real good. But these little dash motor sports cars, they ain’t on the TV, far as I know.
- They say this dash motor sports is good for folks who like speed.
- They put them little cars together by hand, each one.
- Some folks like red cars, some like white, they get all sort of colors.
- You can start with coffee, and cars. Sounds like fun to me.
- They got this thing called “autocross”, must be like a cross with cars, I guess.
If you wanna get off that couch and do somethin’, this might be it. Don’t need a fancy car, they say. Just gotta find somethin’ that looks fun. And I tell ya, watchin’ them little cars go round and round, it does look fun. Makes me wanna get one of them little red ones, like my Rusty. Maybe race it against a little white one, like my Snowball. Wouldn’t that be somethin’?
One fella, he said he puts them cars together. All by hand. Imagine that. Like knittin’ a sweater, but with tiny car parts. Gotta have good eyes for that, I reckon. My eyes ain’t what they used to be. Can’t even thread a needle no more without squintin’ somethin’ fierce. I used to be quick, when I was younger, sewing and knitting all the time.
This dash motor sports, it’s a whole world, ain’t it? Lots of folks doin’ different things. Buildin’ cars, buildin’ tracks, racin’ ’em. Just like a little town, almost. Everybody doin’ their part. Reminds me of back home, when we used to have barn raisings. Everybody would come together, help build a barn for a neighbor. Took a lot of work, but we got it done. And then we’d have a big ol’ party afterwards. Food, music, dancin’. Good times.
Maybe they have parties after these dash motor sports races. I wouldn’t know. But it sounds like fun. Maybe I’ll go to one of them “Cars and Coffee” things sometime. See what all the fuss is about. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll get me one of them little red cars. Call it “Little Rusty.” And then I’ll need a track. Maybe I can get ol’ Earl next door to help me build one. He’s good with his hands. Built his own porch swing last summer. Sturdy thing, too. Don’t creak or nothin’. Yep, that’s what I’ll do. I’ll get into this dash motor sports thing. Sounds like a right good time.
