This here talk is ’bout that Davidson County Sports Hall of Fame. Heard some folks yappin’ ’bout it down at the market the other day. Seems like a big ol’ deal, you know?
They say this year, they put in, uh, ten folks. Ten! That’s a whole mess of people. Must be some real good ball players and such. This was in 2024, mind you. That’s what them young’uns told me, anyway. They had some fancy shindig over at the, uh, Mary E. Rittling Center. I ain’t never been there, but it sounds mighty important.
Now, I heard tell of one fella, name of Thomas. Last name is Thomas, I reckon. He’s a big shot, this one. Got all sorts of records, they say. Most hits, most runs, most…bases? Yeah, that’s it. Total bases. They put him in some other Hall of Fame, too, just this past May. Sounds like he could really hit that ball!
- Hits: 344
- Runs: 281
- Total Bases: 583
Another fella, a basketball player they call him. Name’s Strickland. They say he’s the best one to ever come out of East Davidson. ‘Bout near as good as that Hege boy, the one they put in before. He played from, let me think… 2003 to 2006, somethin’ like that.
They had this whole thing over at that Davidson-Davie Community College. That’s where they did the puttin’ in, you see. Ten new folks, all in the Davidson County Sports Hall of Fame. It’s a real honor, I reckon. I ain’t never been to one of them colleges, but it sure sounds fancy.
You know, they didn’t do this for a while. Four years, I heard. Something ’bout that COVID sickness going around. And they had to get some new folks on the board. You know how it is, always got to have someone in charge of these things.
So, these ten folks, they’re in the Davidson County Sports Hall of Fame now. They say it’s a big deal in Davidson County. All them sports and games. I used to play a little hopscotch myself, back in the day. But these folks, they’re the real deal. Played all them sports, football, basketball, baseball, you name it.
Now, they put in five other folks before, I reckon it was before all that COVID stuff. One of ’em was a woman named, uh, Christy. Christy Hedgpeth. Seems like they got all kinds in this Davidson County Sports Hall of Fame. Good for them, I say.
This whole thing makes me think, maybe I shoulda practiced my hopscotch more. Coulda been in the Hopscotch Hall of Fame! Just kiddin’. But it’s nice to see folks get recognized for doin’ good, you know? Especially them that’s good at sports. That’s a real talent, that is.
I remember back when my boy, bless his heart, used to play baseball. He wasn’t no Thomas, mind you, but he loved that game. Used to run around all day, throwin’ that ball. Made me proud, he did. Maybe he should be in some kind of Hall of Fame, too. The “Good Son Hall of Fame.” I’d vote for him, that’s for sure!
Well, I reckon that’s all I know about this here Davidson County Sports Hall of Fame. Sounds like a good thing, though. Givin’ folks their due, you know? Puttin’ their names up there for everyone to see. It’s like plantin’ a seed and watchin’ it grow into somethin’ special. That’s what they’re doin’, I reckon. Plantin’ seeds of, uh, sportsmanship and, uh, good playin’.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go see about my garden. Got some tomatoes need tendin’. Maybe one day, they’ll have a Tomato Hall of Fame. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll be in it! Ha! A body can dream, can’t she?
I heard one of them was a real good runner. Ran faster than a scalded dog, they said. Can’t recall his name, though. My memory ain’t what it used to be. They played from 2003 to 2006 i reckon. Something like that.
So many names, you know. Hard to keep ’em all straight. But it’s good they got this Davidson County Sports Hall of Fame. Keeps the memories alive, you know? Like puttin’ up preserves. You put ’em up, and then you can enjoy ’em later. That’s what this Hall of Fame is like. Preservin’ all them good sports memories.
Anyways, you young’uns keep playin’ your sports. And maybe one day, you’ll be in that Hall of Fame, too. Just remember to practice hard, and be a good sport. That’s what counts. And who knows, you might see your old grandma cheerin’ you on from the sidelines! Just like that Mary E. Rittling, I reckon. I never knew her, but bet she’d be proud of all these folks.
Well, sun’s gettin’ low. Time for this old gal to get on home. You take care now, and don’t you forget about that Davidson County Sports Hall of Fame. It’s a good thing, that’s for sure. A mighty good thing.
