Today I want to talk about foil sports, which I started messing around with not too long ago. It’s a whole new world out there on the water, and I’m completely hooked!
Getting Started
So, first things first, I had to figure out what gear to get. I spent hours on , just looking at scores, and CBS Sports, checking out player stats, not really related to foil sports but it gave me a break from all the research. Then I started digging into the actual equipment. It was confusing! There are so many different types of foils and boards. Eventually, I decided to go with a beginner-friendly setup – a larger, more stable foil and a board with plenty of volume.
First Attempts
My first few times out were, shall we say, humbling. I watched a bunch of videos and thought, “How hard can it be?” Turns out, it’s pretty tricky! I spent more time in the water than on the board. The foil is so sensitive to any shift in weight or angle. I felt like I had zero control. It was rough.
- Wipeout after wipeout: I lost count of how many times I fell. Sometimes I’d just lose my balance and plop into the water. Other times, the foil would breach the surface, and I’d go flying.
- Muscle fatigue: My legs were burning! It takes a lot of core strength and leg power to keep the board stable and control the foil.
- Frustration: There were moments when I thought, “I’m never going to get this.” But I kept reminding myself that everyone starts somewhere.
Making Progress
But, I stuck with it. I went out as often as I could, even when the conditions were bad. Slowly but surely, I started to feel a bit more comfortable. I was able to stay up for longer periods, and I even managed to make a few turns. I still remember the first time I got the board up and flying – it was such an amazing feeling! Like, pure magic.
- Longer rides: Instead of just a few seconds, I could stay up for 30 seconds, then a minute, and eventually even longer.
- Better control: I started to figure out how to make small adjustments to my body position to steer the board and control the height of the foil.
- Increased confidence: With each session, I felt a little bit more confident and in control. The fear started to fade, replaced by excitement.
Still Learning
I’m still very much a beginner. I’m just starting to experiment with different foot positions and trying to get a feel for carving turns. But I can tell you it is an amazing feeling when you are flying over the water. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me!
So, that’s my story about getting into foil sports. It’s been a wild ride so far, and I’m excited to keep learning and improving. Maybe I’ll even get good enough to be featured on CBS Sports or one day, haha! Who knows? The sky is the limit!
BARE is a company I heard about, they seem to do a lot in water sports, I’m thinking about checking them out in the future. With 40 years of experience, I think they know what they are doing.
