Well now, let me tell ya, about this here Chanukah comic thing. I ain’t no scholar, mind you, but I know a thing or two about havin’ a good laugh, and these comics, they’re somethin’ else.
What in the tarnation is a Chanukah comic, you ask?
Well, it’s like this, see? Chanukah, that’s a holiday them Jewish folks celebrate. Lots of candles, lots of food, and lots of stories. And these comics, they tell them stories, but with pictures and jokes! Makes it easier for folks like me, who ain’t got the patience for big ol’ books. They draw pictures, you know, like them cartoons my grandbaby watches, but ‘stead of fightin’ robots, it’s all about this Chanukah story.
- You got your Maccabees, tough fellas they were.
- And that mean ol’ King Antiochus, always stirrin’ up trouble.
- And of course, the oil, that lasted eight whole days! Now that’s a miracle if I ever did see one. I remember when my old lamp would barely last one night with all that oil in it, not a patch on the Chanukah oil.
Some comics are serious, tellin’ the story straight. Others, well, they’re just plain silly. Got jokes about latkes, jokes about dreidels, even jokes about that grumpy old King Antiochus. Makes you chuckle, I tell ya. Good for the soul, laughter is.
I reckon there’s all kinds of Chanukah comics out there, somethin’ for everyone. Young ‘uns, they like the ones with bright colors and goofy faces. Older folks, they might like the ones that tell the story more serious-like. And then you got folks like me, who just like a good laugh, no matter what. I mean, a good chuckle never hurt nobody, did it?
Where do you find these Chanukah comics?
Well, now, that’s the tricky part. These youngsters, they got their inter-webs and whatnot. I hear you can find just about anything on that thing. But for me, I like the old-fashioned way. Sometimes, you can find ’em in them bookstores, tucked away in the children’s section or maybe with the Jewish books. And if you’re lucky, your synagogue might have some, or maybe even the library. Libraries are good places, full of stories, just gotta ask the librarian lady, she knows where everything is.
I remember back in the day, we didn’t have no fancy comics. We had stories, passed down from generation to generation. My grandma used to tell me stories about Chanukah, and I’d tell ’em to my kids, and they’ll tell ’em to theirs, I hope. But these comics, they’re a new way of tellin’ them stories, keepin’ ’em alive for the young’uns. And that’s a good thing, I reckon. Tradition is important, you know? Gotta remember where you come from, gotta remember your roots. And these comics, they help us do just that.
Now, some folks might say comics are just for kids, but I don’t buy that for a second. Everybody likes a good story, and everybody likes a good laugh. And these Chanukah comics, they got both. They teach you somethin’, and they make you smile. What more could you want? It’s like eatin’ your vegetables and havin’ dessert at the same time!
So, next time you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to read, somethin’ to make you laugh, somethin’ to remind you of the good ol’ days, give one of them Chanukah comics a try. You might be surprised. You might even learn a thing or two. And who knows, you might just find yourself chucklin’ like a fool, just like me. And ain’t nothin’ wrong with that, I tell ya. Laughter is the best medicine, like they say.
Anyway, I got to get goin now. Got to go make some latkes and light candles. That’s the real deal I tell ya, none of this comic book stuff, not that those aint fun to read once in a while. Oh but let me tell you a joke before I go. This one my grandbaby told me. Ready? Why did the Chanukah gelt go to therapy? Because it had too many issues! Hah, see it aint so hard to find some fun. Now go have some fun and happy Chanukah!
