Well, let me tell ya ’bout this Comic Con 2023 in Midland, TX. Folks call it the “Permian Basin Comic Con,” fancy name, huh? Don’t rightly know what “Permian Basin” means, but it sure sounds important.
This thing happened at the Midland County Horseshoe Arena. Big place, lots of room for all sorts of goings-on. They had it a few times this year, see. One in March, that was the big one, the “Comic Con X,” then they had another one in December, kinda like a Christmas thing, they called it the “Holiday Edition.”

Now, I ain’t never been to one of these “Comic Cons” before. Sounded like a whole lotta fuss to me. But my grandson, he’s all excited about it. Says there’s gonna be all sorts of folks there. Celebrities, he says, like movie stars and such. And folks dressed up in costumes, what he calls “cosplayers.” Said they look like they stepped right outta them comic books he reads.
They also got vendors there, sellin’ all sorts of stuff. Comics, toys, pictures, you name it. And artists too, folks who draw them comics. My grandson says some of ’em are even comic creators, the ones who make up the whole stories.
The Horseshoe Arena, that’s on Arena Trail. Easy enough to find, if you know your way around Midland. 2514 Arena Trail, to be exact. They had all sorts of activities there too, not just lookin’ at stuff and buyin’ things. My grandson was talkin’ about panels and Q&As, where you can listen to folks talk and ask ’em questions. He was real keen on seein’ some of them celebrities, gettin’ their autographs and such.
They had a whole schedule of things happening, gotta keep track of it all so you don’t miss nothin’. My grandson had it all planned out, where he wanted to be and when. Had to buy tickets to get in, of course. Don’t rightly know how much they cost, but seems like everything costs a pretty penny these days.
This Comic Con thing, it’s a big deal, seems like. My grandson says it’s one of the best ones around here. Said it’s gettin’ bigger every year. They’re already plannin’ for next year, he says. Gotta make it even bigger and better, that’s what they always say.
Folks come from all over for this thing, not just Midland. My grandson met some folks who drove all the way from other parts of Texas. Heard some even flew in from other states, can you believe it? All for some comics and costumes.
Now, I still don’t rightly understand all the fuss. But seein’ my grandson so happy, well, that’s enough for me. He was talkin’ a mile a minute about all the things he saw and did. Met some of his favorite artists, got some autographs, even bought a few new comics. Said it was the best day ever.
They had so much goin’ on. My grandson mentioned they had a speaking schedule so you know when the famous folks were gonna be talkin’. And an agenda, so you didn’t get lost and miss out on things. He also spent a whole lotta time lookin’ at reviews and entry timings and all that. Said he had to be prepared.
So, if you’re into that sort of thing, this Permian Basin Comic Con seems like a good one to go to. Even an old lady like me can see that it brings folks a lot of joy. And that’s a good thing, ain’t it? Next year, maybe I’ll even go with my grandson, just to see what all the fuss is about. Maybe I’ll even dress up like a superhero, though I reckon I’d look more like a super-granny. Heck, maybe they even got a booth for old ladies, sellin’ cookies and lemonade. Now that’s somethin’ I could get behind!
Makes me think how some of these other places do their comic con things. My grandson said there’s a big one in San Diego, but sounds mighty expensive and far away. Heard about others in Houston, and down south in McAllen, all across Texas, it seems. They even got one in England, he says, called Midlands Comic Con! Seems like these things are poppin’ up everywhere now. But for us folks around here, the Comic Con in Midland, TX, that’s the one to go to. It’s close to home and it makes my grandson happy, and that’s all that matters.
