Well now, let me tell ya somethin’ about keepin’ them funny books safe. You know, the ones with all them pictures and words? Yeah, them comic books. My grandkid, he’s got a whole mess of ‘em. And if he don’t take care of ’em right, they gonna be nothin’ but trash in no time.
First thing’s first, you gotta keep them dry. Don’t leave ‘em out in the rain, or in a damp basement. Water, it’ll ruin them faster than a chicken pecks corn. They get all soggy and wrinkly, and then the colors run, and pfft, they ain’t worth nothin’ anymore. Just like them old newspapers I used to line the chicken coop with, once they get wet, they are good for nothin’.
And bugs! Them little critters, they love paper. Especially them silverfish, they’ll eat right through them pages. So you gotta keep them bugs away. Don’t leave food crumbs around where you keep your books. And make sure the place is clean, ya hear? A clean house is a happy house, and happy house don’t have bugs eatin’ your stuff.
Now, about how you put them away. Don’t just toss them in a pile on the floor, for goodness sake! You need somethin’ to keep ‘em in. Them cardboard boxes, the ones they sell at the store, they work pretty good. Or you can get them plastic bins, the ones with the lids. Just make sure they’re clean and dry before you put your books in.
And don’t go crammin’ them in there like sardines. Give them books some space to breathe, ya know? If you stuff them in too tight, they gonna get bent and creased. And then they ain’t gonna be worth much to nobody.
- Keep ’em dry
- Keep ’em away from bugs
- Use a good box or bin
- Don’t cram them in too tight
My grandkid, he’s got these fancy plastic sleeves he puts his books in. Says it keeps them from gettin’ fingerprints and dirt on ‘em. And he got these stiff cardboard things, he calls ‘em “backing boards,” he puts in with the books to keep ‘em from bendin’. Sounds like a lot of fuss to me, but he says it’s important if you want them books to be worth somethin’ someday.
And sunlight! That’s another thing you gotta watch out for. Don’t leave them books in the sun, not even for a little while. The sun, it fades the colors somethin’ fierce. Makes ‘em look all washed out and old. Keep them in a dark place, that’s the best. Like a closet, or under the bed. Just make sure it’s dry and clean.
Now, some folks, they like to get them books graded. That means they send them off to some company, and them folks look at the book real close and give it a grade, like A, B, C. The better the grade, the more the book is worth. But that costs money, and I ain’t got much of that to spare. So I just tell my grandkid to take good care of his books, and that’s good enough for me.
You see, takin’ care of them comic books, it ain’t rocket science. It’s just common sense. Keep ‘em dry, keep ‘em clean, keep ‘em safe from bugs and sunlight. And don’t go treatin’ ‘em like garbage. If you do that, them books will last a long time, and maybe, just maybe, they’ll be worth somethin’ someday.
And one more thing. Don’t be eatin’ or drinkin’ around your books. You spill somethin’ on them, and it’s gonna stain. And then you’re gonna be cryin’ over spilled milk, or soda pop, or whatever it is you spilled. So just be careful, that’s all.
This is all just plain sense, like keepin’ your eggs from breakin’ or your milk from sourin’. Take care of your things, and they’ll last longer. That’s all there is to it.
So, there you have it. That’s all I know about keepin’ them funny books safe. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go check on my biscuits. Don’t want them burnin’ now, do we?
