Alright, so you wanna know about this here Bronx Anime and Comic Expo, huh? Well, let me tell ya, it’s a big to-do, like a county fair but with all them funny-looking Japanese cartoons and comic books. My grandkids, they love that stuff. Always yappin’ about it.
I heard tell it’s happening on August 3rd, this year, 2024. They’re having it at that big church, St. Helena’s Roman Catholic Church, over in the Bronx. You know, the one with the tall steeple? Yeah, that one. Sounds like a fancy place for a bunch of cartoons, but hey, whatever floats their boat.
Now, I ain’t no expert on this “anime” stuff. To me, a cartoon’s a cartoon, whether it’s Mickey Mouse or one of them big-eyed girls with the crazy hair. But the young’uns, they say it’s different. They got their “cosplay” where they dress up like the characters. Imagine that! Grown folks, running around in costumes. Reminds me of Halloween, but in the middle of summer.
- They got voice actors there, too. You know, the folks who do the talking for the cartoons. Apparently, they’re a big deal. Folks line up to get their autographs and pictures. Beats me why, but hey, everyone’s got their hobbies, I guess.
- And then there’s the comics. Now, those I understand a little better. I used to read the funny papers when I was a girl. But these ain’t your grandpa’s comics, that’s for sure. They got all sorts of superheroes and villains, fighting and whatnot. And the artwork, well, it’s something else. Real colorful and detailed.
They also got video games, toys, “funk-pop” things – whatever those are – and even a “Photobooth360”. Sounds like a whole lot of noise and commotion to me, but the kids, they love it. They say it’s a chance to meet other folks who like the same stuff they do. Makes ’em feel like they belong, I reckon.
This fella, Jcee Delacruz, seems to be the one puttin’ it all together. He’s been doing it for a while now, I hear. Had one last year too, in 2023, but I think it was a little later in August then. Seems like he’s getting the hang of it, this expo thing.
They say it ain’t as big as that one in Manhattan, the “Anime NYC.” That one’s over in a giant building, the Javits Center. Real fancy-schmancy. And then there’s the “Anime Expo” in Los Angeles. Now that’s the biggest one of them all, they say. Sold out this year, apparently. But this Bronx one, it’s got its own charm, I guess. It’s local, you know? Folks from the neighborhood can come on down and have a good time.
So, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to do on August 3rd, and you don’t mind a bit of noise and a whole lotta colorful characters, then maybe you should check out this here Bronx Anime and Comic Expo. Just don’t expect me to know who all them characters are. I’ll be at home, watchin’ my soaps. At least those folks speak plain English, haha!
But you know, it’s good to see the young folks havin’ fun. Keeps ’em outta trouble, mostly. And who knows, maybe I’ll even sneak a peek myself. Just to see what all the fuss is about. But don’t tell nobody, alright? I got a reputation to uphold, ya know. Can’t be seen hangin’ out with a bunch of cartoon characters. What would the neighbors say?
Anyway, that’s all I know about this here expo. Hope it helps ya out. And if you go, have yourself a good time. Just don’t forget to bring your earplugs. It’s bound to be loud!
