Okay, so today I wanted to mess around with something a little different, something that’s been on my mind for a while now – “Journey Into Fear” comics. Yeah, the old-school horror stuff. I’ve always been a sucker for those vintage vibes, and I figured, why not dive in and see what these comics are all about?
First things first, I gotta find these things. They ain’t exactly easy to come by these days. I remember reading somewhere that they started back in 1943, which is wild. I started by hitting up some online comic databases, just browsing through what’s out there. Man, there are a lot of them, these are not easy to find.
And then, I got digging into the whole “pre-code horror” thing. Apparently, these comics were a big deal back in the day, before all the regulations and censorship stuff came into play. There was some website called Key Collector Comics, which had a list of 21 comics from “Journey Into Fear.” I figured that was a good place to start.
But, you know, just looking at lists and covers online isn’t the same as actually holding one of these bad boys in your hands. I wanted the real deal, the whole experience. I started hitting up some local comic shops, hoping to get lucky.
I struck out a few times, but then I found this one shop that’s been around since 1961. The owner told me they sold a “Fantastic Four #1” for 25 cents back in the day. Imagine that. They had a decent selection of vintage stuff, and boom, there it was – a stack of “Journey Into Fear” comics, tucked away in a corner.
I grabbed a few that looked interesting, paid the guy, and rushed home like a kid on Christmas morning. Finally, time to actually read these things.
I started flipping through the pages, and man, the artwork is something else. So raw, so intense, nothing like the polished stuff you see today. I spent the rest of the day just soaking it all in, reading through the stories, and I gotta say it was a blast. These comics are like a time machine, taking you back to a totally different era of storytelling.
