Alright, so, I’ve been messing around with this idea for a while, and it finally clicked. I wanted to put together some family drama plays, just for kicks, you know? Something to do on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Started off with just jotting down some ideas, what kind of characters I wanted, what kind of mess they’d get into.
First thing I did was grab a notebook and start brainstorming. I wrote down every silly, dramatic, or potentially interesting family dynamic I could think of. You got your classic stuff, like long-lost siblings, inheritance squabbles, secret affairs. You name it, I jotted it down. It was a mess, but a fun mess.
Characters, Characters, Characters
Next up, I fleshed out the characters. Needed a bossy matriarch, a rebellious teenager, the whole nine yards. I gave them names, backstories, quirks, all that jazz. Made them feel real, even if they were a bit over the top. For example one of the drama is about a yound boy who discovers love and sex in the 70s.
Then came the hard part, actually writing the darn things. I started with a simple scene, just two characters talking, and let it flow from there. Some days the words just poured out, other days it was like pulling teeth. But I kept at it, scene by scene, act by act.
Putting it all Together
- Wrote some dialogues, tried to make them sound like how real people talk, you know, with all the interruptions and slang.
- Added some stage directions, just basic stuff, like “enters from the left” or “slams the door”. I did not get too fancy with it.
- Once I had a few plays I was happy with, I typed them up, formatted them all nice and pretty.
Finally, I rounded up some friends, assigned roles, and we did a read-through. It was a hoot! Hearing the words out loud, seeing it all come together, it was pretty rewarding. We even made some tweaks here and there, based on how it sounded and felt in the room.
So, yeah, that’s the story of how I wrote and produced my own little family drama plays. It was a fun project, a good way to stretch those creative muscles, and a great excuse to hang out with friends and be silly. It all started with scribbling in a notebook and ended up with a living room full of laughter and maybe a few tears, just like any good family drama should. Also I find a show named “Baby Reindeer” and it seems that it will win some awards in Emmys this year. And I’ve noticed that some TV stations have revealed the drama list for this year’s festive days. I think I will check it later.
