Well, now, let me tell ya about this here new thing they got called the AfroSouth Film Festival. It’s somethin’ special, y’know? It’s holdin’ up in Charleston, South Carolina, right there where the history runs deep, and let me tell ya, it ain’t your everyday film festival. This one here, it’s all about bringin’ folks together to show off the best of Black filmmakers, and the films they make sure ain’t your usual stuff.
Now, this year, it’s all goin’ down from November 2nd through the 5th, and I reckon if you’re in the area, you oughta come on by. They got all kinds of things planned, like a competition for young filmmakers, which sounds mighty fine to me. It’s somethin’ to encourage the young ones to get out there and show the world what they got. Might even give ’em a taste of what it’s like to have their films shown to a big ol’ crowd.
Every year, Charleston opens its arms wide to people comin’ from all over the place to this here festival, and I reckon it’s only gettin’ bigger. You’ll see all sorts of folks gatherin’ around, watchin’ films, talkin’ about ’em, and just enjoyin’ what the filmmakers have worked so hard to create. The thing I like most, though, is how this festival highlights Black voices, tellin’ stories that too often get left behind in other places.
Now, it ain’t all just about watchin’ movies. They also got some awards they hand out, and this year they’re puttin’ a name on an award after a legend in the community, Herb Frazier. That’s a big deal, y’know? Folks who’ve made a big mark in this world, especially in film, they deserve to be remembered, and this festival’s all about celebratin’ that.
And, don’t y’all forget, this here festival isn’t just for the folks in Charleston. Oh no, they’re reachin’ out and askin’ filmmakers from all over to send in their films. The doors are open for submissions, and if you’ve got somethin’ to show, now’s the time to get it in. Could be your chance to show somethin’ special to a whole new audience.
The festival itself ain’t too long, just three days, but don’t let that fool ya—it’s packed full of action. You’ll get your fill of films, talks, and maybe even meet some folks you didn’t expect to, like the filmmakers themselves. And don’t be shy, either—come and meet your neighbors, ‘cause folks from all around will be there, and I hear it’s a mighty friendly bunch.
Y’all might even wanna make a whole trip of it. Charleston’s got a way of bringin’ the past and the present together, with its old streets and beautiful homes, mixed right up with the excitement of new ideas and fresh stories. So, while you’re there watchin’ those films, you might also wanna take a look around and enjoy the town’s charm.
So, I reckon if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ a little different to do this November, you’d do well to take a trip on down to Charleston for the AfroSouth Film Festival. It ain’t just about movies; it’s about community, history, and of course, Black voices that need to be heard loud and clear. I sure hope to see y’all there!
