Well now, let me tell you ’bout this here Calhoun County Sports Hall of Fame. It’s a place, see, down in Jacksonville, Alabama. They got it all set up to give a big howdy-do to all them sporty folks, the players and the coaches, the ones who really put their backs into it.
I reckon it ain’t easy gettin’ in there. They got this here Board of Directors, a bunch of high-falutin’ folks I guess. They look over all the names, all the folks who done somethin’ special in sports. They pick the best of the best, ya know? The ones who really shined.
I heard tell of some of them fellers who got in. Let’s see, there’s this Steve Christopher feller. Don’t know what he done, but it musta been somethin’ good. Then there’s Larry Davidson. Now that’s a name I think I heard before. He was probably one of them fellers who could throw a ball real far, or run real fast, or somethin’ like that.
- Steve Christopher
- Larry Davidson
- Mike Henley
- Brenard Howard
And don’t forget Mike Henley. Sounds like a good ol’ boy. I bet he was tough as nails, one of them fellers who never gave up. And Brenard Howard too. They all musta been somethin’ special to get into that Hall of Fame.
It ain’t just about winnin’ though, I don’t think. It’s about more than that. It’s about playin’ fair, and workin’ hard, and bein’ a good sport. That’s what my pappy always told me. Said it don’t matter if you win or lose, long as you give it your all.
I reckon that’s what them folks in the Hall of Fame did. They give it their all, every time they stepped onto the field, or the court, or whatever it was they played on. And they done it with pride, and with respect for the game.
They probably got all sorts of pictures and stories in that Hall of Fame. Pictures of them fellers when they was young and spry, runnin’ and jumpin’ and throwin’ things. Stories about the big games they won, and the tough losses they overcome. It’d be somethin’ to see, I tell ya.
It makes a body proud, knowin’ that we got folks like that around here. Folks who work hard and do good things. It gives you somethin’ to look up to, ya know? Makes you wanna be a better person.
I ain’t no athlete, that’s for sure. Never could run too fast, or throw too far. But I always admired them who could. They got a gift, I reckon. And it’s good that we got a place to remember them, to honor their achievements. It shows the young’uns what hard work and dedication can get ya.
So, next time you’re down Jacksonville way, you oughta stop by that Calhoun County Sports Hall of Fame. Take a look around, see the pictures, read the stories. It’ll do ya good, I reckon. It’ll remind ya that there’s more to life than just sittin’ around and doin’ nothin’. There’s workin’ hard, and playin’ fair, and bein’ the best you can be. That’s what this Hall of Fame is all about, celebrating them that done just that.
And that’s all I got to say about that. It’s a good thing, this here Hall of Fame. A real good thing.
